Huron Digital Pathology was granted its first US patent for barcoding digital images on April 21, 2020. Patent #10,628,736 describes a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system and method that generates a relatively short vector or array of data, referred to as a barcode, from an input digital image and is a significant building block for Huron’s image search for pathology platform. The invention, from Dr. Hamid Tizhoosh, allows large digital images to be represented as a bunch of barcodes. Once in compact barcode form, large digital images can be quickly and easily compared to each other to enable real-time image search.
